Man killed in crash on I-240 - WMC Action News 5

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) -

Many unanswered questions linger after a tragedy happened Sunday on Interstate-240 near Mt. Moriah Road on Sunday night.

"A man just died on the expressway," said Tray Bledsoe, who witnessed the crash. "We tried to help him out, me and my cousin."

The crash temporarily shut down the interstate while police were on the scene.

Bledsoe says he will never forget his Sunday night drive home from Wolfchase Galleria.

"It really just flashed before my eyes," Bledsoe recalled.

Bledsoe and his cousin, Martinez Cooper, watched the man police later identified as 37-year-old Dewitt Parker fly down the highway. Police say he was going over 90 miles per hour.

"He was riding and his arms were hanging out the sunroof of the window," Bledsoe explained.

Bledsoe and his cousin said Parker appeared to be racing-- or chasing after-- another car.

Suddenly, Bledsoe says the driver hit the wall.

"We ended up pulling over to see exactly what was going on," he explained.

Bledsoe and his family tried to help the victim.

"We thought the car was about to catch on fire, so what we really was trying to get him out the car first," Bledsoe said, adding that the man was bleeding too much for them to be able to help.

They say they found Parker dead in the passenger seat.

"It made me go home and park, and I was like, 'I'm not driving anymore," said Cooper. "That scared me for the rest of the day."

It was originally reported that Parker was found shot in his chin, but the Medical Examiner determined he didn't die from a gunshot wound.

A quick look at Parker's record revealed that he had several speeding tickets and a restraining order filed against him. That document was later dismissed.

Bledsoe says the incident was a reminder to be careful.

"Slow down," said Bledsoe. "That's the most important thing. Slow down."

Slow down."

Memphis firefighter charged with heroin possession - WMC Action News 5

James Anderson (Photo Source: WMC Action News 5)James Anderson (Photo Source: WMC Action News 5)

A Memphis firefighter may be battling more than just fires after he was arrested on a series of drug charges.

James Anderson, 45, has been suspended with pay after he was found with heroin.

"Who do we trust now?" asked retired Shelby County Sheriff's deputy and concerned citizen Jennings Bernard.

According to police, Anderson was found unconscious after a possible heroin overdose.

A witness told police she saw Anderson with a syringe in his lap and a bottle cap. She later told police he had on a Memphis firefighter T-shirt.

Anderson was taken to the hospital and was arrested later.

Police found two packages or heroin and syringes in Anderson's car.

"When they take an oath, they must uphold that oath," Bernard added.

Anderson has been charged with two counts of possession of a controlled substance with intention to sell.

Bernard says this is an example of how public servants can break promises and burn trust.

"When you deny that trust that we have given you, then I have a serious problem with it."

A spokesperson for the Memphis Fire Department confirmed that Anderson, a 13-year veteran with MFD, has been relieved of duty pending an investigation.
