Recap: Memphis vs. Middle Tennessee - The State


Memphis, TN (SportsNetwork.com) - Paxton Lynch threw for 219 yards, two touchdowns and an interception as the Memphis Tigers defeated the Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders, 36-17, in a non-conference battle at Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium.


Lynch completed 21-of-35 pass attempts for the Tigers (2-1) in the win. Doroland Dorceus ran for 91 yards and one touchdown, and Tank Jakes recorded two sacks (one for a safety), forced a fumble and had an interception.


As for the Blue Raiders (2-2), Austin Grammer threw for 237 yards and an interception while connecting on 24-of-35 passes. Shane Tucker rushed for 23 yards and two touchdowns, while Demetrius Frazier recorded seven receptions for 96 yards in the loss.


On the opening drive, Lynch threw a seven-yard touchdown pass to Alan Cross to cap off a 11-play, 79-yard drive to give the Tigers an early 7-0 lead.


Jakes extended the Memphis lead to 9-0 when he sacked Grammer in end zone for a safety with 6:20 left to play in the first quarter.


Tucker got the Blue Raiders on the board when he ran in a score from one yard out to cut the lead to 9-7 late in the first quarter.


Jake Elliott pushed the Tigers' lead to 12-7 when he converted a 27-yard field goal attempt with 9:43 left to play in the second quarter.


Dorceus struck two minutes later for Memphis when ran in from 32 yards out to extend the Memphis lead to 19-7.


Elliott made it 2-for-2 with just over seven minutes left in the third quarter, hitting a field goal from 29 yards out.


With 3:33 left to play in the third quarter, Cody Clark connected on a 36-yard field goal for the Blue Raiders to cut the lead to 22-10.


In the forth quarter, Lynch connected on a 50-yard touchdown pass to Cross for the Tigers for the 29-10 advantage. Just over a minute later, Bobby McCain recovered a Grammer fumble and returned it 59 yards for a touchdown. Memphis took a 36-10 lead with 11:13 left to play in the game.


With 2:17 left, Tucker cut the lead to 19 with a three-yard touchdown run, which ended the scoring in the contest.


Memphis won the game by outgaining the opposition 480-325 in total yards. The Tigers had the advantage on the ground, 261 rushing yards to 88 for the Blue Raiders.
