Couple indicted in 10 count crime spree - WMC-TV

MADISON COUNTY, TN -

(WMC-TV) – A Jackson, Tenn. couple was indicted in Madison County on 10 counts for a crime spree that spanned December 2013 until January 2014. Six of the couple's alleged crimes were against women between the ages of 55 and 83, who were doing their grocery shopping when they were robbed.

Garrett Paige, 26, and Jennifer Morris, 22, are accused of committing five of the 10 crimes together. The alleged crimes include burglary, theft, vandalism, aggravated robbery, and vehicle burglary.

The two were both indicted for burglary, theft, and vandalism for a break-in at Aloha Pools, located in the 600 block of Carriage House Drive. Investigators say they found information that Paige and Morris were responsible for the Aloha Pools break-in after the couple was arrested for crimes committed later in December and January.

The police investigation revealed that after the store had closed for the day on Dec. 9, Paige shattered a glass door. Morris, a former employee, entered the business and stole cash from a register. The couple had not been previously charged with this crime and the case was presented directly to a grand jury.

They were also both indicted for aggravated robbery and vehicle burglary for an attack on an 82-year-old woman. On Dec. 12, Morris threatened the woman with a stun gun in the parking lot of Batteries Plus, located on Innsdale Cove near Vann Drive. She is accused of stealing the victim's wallet from her purse, which was in the victim's car. Paige, Morris' boyfriend, is accused of being the getaway driver.

Paige alone was indicted for three counts of theft for stealing purses at Kroger and one count of identity theft for using a bank card from one of the stolen purses. He reportedly stole purses from three different women at a Jackson Kroger store located in the 900 block of N. Parkway over the course of five days in late December.

According to investigators, Paige stole an 83-year-old woman's purse from her cart inside the store on Dec. 23. The next day, he reportedly took a 73-year-old woman's purse from her cart, while she was loading groceries into her car. On Dec. 28, investigators say Paige took a 55-year-old woman's purse from her cart while she was at the self checkout. Later that evening, he was arrested at the Kroger parking lot. The latest victim's purse was still in his car.

Morris was indicted alone for aggravated robbery stemming from an attack on a 76-year-old woman, whom she knew. Investigators say that on Jan. 7, Morris went to the woman's house on Ellis Drive and attacked her with a stun gun, then strangled her. She demanded money from the woman. The victim agreed and wrote her a check. Morris is said to have taken the check then left.

Two days later, on Jan. 9, police arrested Morris for the robbery and were reportedly able to link her to the other crimes.

Paige is being held at the Madison County Jail on $265,000 bond, and Morris is being held on $250,000 bond. They will be arraigned Monday, April 7, in Madison County Circuit Court.

Florida faces upstart Dayton in South Region final - First Coast News

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — The Dayton Flyers are feeling very confident and loose with the upsets they've already pulled this NCAA tournament. They're also ready to wreck what's left of anyone's bracket with their greatest challenge ahead and a trip to the Final Four on the line.

Enter the Florida Gators, the overall top seed.

While the 11th-seeded Flyers already have exceeded expectations going into Saturday's South Regional final, the Gators are driven too. They talk of chasing greatness, trying to add to a 29-game winning streak that's the best in school history. Florida also is back in the Elite Eight having lost here the past three years.

"We're just very blessed and fortunate to be a team that can put themselves in this opportunity to play for a Final Four again," Florida senior Patric Young said Friday. "Going to prepare and do the best we can, especially as a senior class, because it's our last go-round to make it to that next step."

The Gators ended their past three seasons ended by Butler in overtime, Louisville and Michigan. Young said the Gators have learned lessons from each of those regional final losses from not finishing a game when they had a lead or not coming out ready like a year ago when Michigan routed them 79-59.

"We're going to do the best we can and make sure we go out there leaving no regrets," Young said.

Coach Billy Donovan, who won his 450th career game at Florida when the Gators downed UCLA on Thursday night, said this team is so very different from each of the past three. Donovan noted he had to replace three starters in Mike Rosario, Kenny Boynton and Erik Murphy from last year's team alone.

(Photo by Streeter Lecka/Getty Images)(Photo: Streeter Lecka Getty Images)

But every loss to end a season hurts, and Donovan isn't ready to separate one from another.

"I can tell you it was just as painful in 2000 walking off the court losing the national championship game as it was losing last year in the Elite Eight," Donovan said. "So I don't know if there's any easy way because I think everybody this time of year is putting their heart and soul."

Florida (35-2) hasn't lost since Dec. 2 at UConn, and the Gators' win over UCLA matched the school record for most wins in a season set by the 2007 national championship squad. Their string of Elite Eights is even more impressive considering no other team has even made four straight Sweet 16s in the same span.

Dayton coach Archie Miller was asked if he has quizzed brother Sean for tips on Florida's press considering Arizona played the Gators last season. Miller said his brother's too busy and they're not talking anyway right now. But the Dayton coach has seen the Gators plenty on TV.

"You understand kind of their pedigree right now," Miller said. "They're the number 1 overall seed for a reason. They've won 29 games in a row. I don't know who can help me, to be honest with you."

Miller will counter Florida's experience and winning tradition with his very deep bench. Dayton (26-10) played 12 Flyers in beating Stanford 82-72 in the semifinal, and they aren't worried about seeding at this point of a tournament where they've already knocked off Ohio State followed by Syracuse in the opening weekend.

"It made us think we can play against anybody in the country," Dayton guard Jordan Sibert said. "It's just our nature to know we can go out there and compete for 40 minutes. At the end of the game, we'll be right there to win it."

Donovan has been impressed by the Flyers' unselfish approach with any of 12 scholarship players capable of scoring double figures in any given game.

"The ball always finds the open man," Donovan said.

Defense likely will be the key. Florida ranks third nationally in scoring defense, allowing 57.8 points a game. The Gators haven't allowed more than 68 points in a game over the past 10 games. Dayton is pretty stingy too, allowing only two opponents to top 70 or more in its past seven games.

With plenty of Gators' fans setting their sights on the Final Four in Texas, Dayton could wind up with a home-court advantage at the FedExForum. Miller said he had heard Flyers' fans already have taken over downtown Memphis with the raucous campus celebration relocating to Tennessee.

The Gators are ready to tune them out, though they did have Tim Tebow cheering them Thursday night.

"We've been able to handle that all year long," Young said.

But every loss to end a season hurts, and Donovan isn't ready to separate one from another.

Consumer Reports: Supermarket savings - WMC-TV

MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - Walmart is America's largest grocer, but in Consumer Reports' ratings of 55 supermarkets Walmart supercenters landed at the bottom, based on a survey of 27,000 of Consumer Reports' subscribers.

Eight out of ten shoppers had at least one gripe — such as not enough open checkout lanes or items were out of stock. And Walmart earned low scores for meat and produce quality.

Many people are drawn to Walmart because of its low prices. But Consumer Reports' survey found that people thought that the prices were as low or even lower at other grocery chains. In fact, seven of the highest-rated supermarkets rated better than Walmart for price (Trader Joe's, Costco, Market Basket, Fareway Stores, Stater Brothers, Win-Co, and Aldi).

But no matter where you shop, there are good ways to cut costs.

- Buy store brands. You'll save about 20 percent on average. And in Consumer Reports' taste tests they often score as well as name brands.

- Skip cut up fruits and vegetables. Whole produce costs far less.

- Check unit pricing. It's the best way to determine which package size is the most economical.

- Skim weekly specials for big bargains. The idea is that they draw you into the store. But don't be seduced into buying more expensive items that aren't on sale.

- Beware those "ten for ten dollar" deals. You usually get the same bargain if you just buy one. So only buy what you really need.
